Foundation Announces 2009

College Scholarship Awards Program

Awards Increased, Video Category Added

Deadline: March 31, 2009

The Credit Union Foundation of MD & DC is pleased to announce its $11,000 College Scholarship Program for 2009. Ten $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to the winning essay-based applicants in May 2009, and a new video-based award category has been added and will earn the selected video producer a $1,000 college scholarship.
This year’s essay topic is:

Credit Union Gen Y
Create a credit union that is strictly run by people under the age of 30, from the Board of Directors to the president to the tellers. In 750 words or less, explain what your credit union looks like, where it’s located, what products and services you focus on, and the unique aspects that make your credit union stand out.

The newly introduced video topic is:
How are credit unions and banks different?

Any member of a Maryland or D.C.-based credit union who currently attends or who has been accepted to attend college may apply.
“We believe that this scholarship program provides a number of benefits to both credit unions and their members,” noted Foundation Chair Lisa Jester. “The awardees receive needed financial assistance to help them meet their educational expenses. The essay and video topics provokes innovative and useful responses that can be used to help credit unions better serve their college-age members while providing a learning experience for the applicant. And credit unions can use the scholarship offering to recruit young member.”
Foundation Executive Director Kyle Swisher adds, “We’ve structured the scholarship program so that individual credit unions, both large and small, can offer the program to their members as if the scholarships are an ‘in-house’ offering from the credit union itself. The Foundation takes care of preparing the applications, putting the program on line, receiving the applications, managing the judging, and of course, funding the $11,000 in awards. We even have lobby posters for credit unions to use and newsletter articles available on our website. And if one of their members is selected as a scholarship winner, it’s the credit union that presents the check to the winner.”

You pause for a moment to focus on the changes in financial services since 2008, and in particular, the changes and improvements in services and products provided by your credit union where you’ve been a member for many years.

Now, in 750 words or less, use your imagination and vision to describe the changes and improvements in credit union services that you foresee will unfold from 2008 to 2020 -
